Thanks!

Re: Test-Driving the New Hybrid

wow! looks good :)

Re: Test-Driving the New Hybrid

Awesome Brian, thanks! You can't tell an OpenID story without JanRain--you guys are too good. ;)

Re: Test-Driving the New Hybrid

This is great background on what is certain to be a pivotal piece of the Open Web Stack. It's really cool to see the OpenID+OAuth hybrid come to life in the real world and provide a positive user experience! Here's another small piece of history:

Kevin Turner created an OAuth extension for OpenID in August 2007. At the time OAuth was still being spec'd out, but since it seemed like "chocolate and peanut butter" to us at JanRain we set out to combine the two in the form an OpenID extension. At the time is was less practical since all the OpenID providers were pure authentication (MyOpenID, Verisign PiP, etc) plays, and none of the other players (Google, Yahoo, Plaxo, Pownce, Twitter...) were yet offering OAuth protected access to their APIs.

Here's the thread on the OAuth list. It's an interesting read, and it's clear that at the time OpenID+OAuth tasted like chocolate and pickles to some of the OAuth heavies :)

http://groups.google.com/gr...

Note: The demos mentioned in the linked thread are no longer online.

Re: Test-Driving the New Hybrid

I think this is a great idea & I'm excited to see Plaxo & Google pushing the envelope, but I'm curious....When will Plaxo implement Two-way Gmail contacts sync? I'm waiting for this killer feature!

Re: Test-Driving the New Hybrid

All meetings should be held at bars!

Re: Test-Driving the New Hybrid

> It just goes to show that there’s still no substitute for locking a bunch of people
> in a room for hours at a time to focus on a problem. (Though in this case, we
> weren’t so much locked in as enticed to stay with additional drink tickets, heh.) > And it also shows the power of collaborating across company lines by
> developing open community standards that everyone can benefit from

Great to hear - I'm looking forward to tackling the design issues next week in the same way!

By George, this is a great article, thanks for the story, Joseph.
